Desperate for You, Psalm 42:1 - Written by Don Hulmes

As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.  Psalm 42:1

As you read further in this psalm, it is clearly a psalm of lament.  The author is in a period of spiritual drought and he is comparing the urgent need of his soul to life sustaining water.  Perhaps he is struggling with depression, fear, or turmoil in his life, but he’s reaching out for what he knows to be the One source of true comfort and relief from his distress.  He’s thirsty and it’s a thirst that only God can satisfy.

Truth is we’re all thirsty, but are we thirsting for the right things?  Are we thirsting for what the world has to offer, which will only leave us more thirsty?  Or are we, as Jesus said in Matthew 5:6 , “Thirsting for righteousness that will satisfy.“?

When our relationship with God is not what it should be, are we desperate to restore it?  Do we view our relationship with God as luxury or necessity?  The good news is that God is always ready and willing to forgive us and restore us into a right relationship with Him.  In the words of Jesus, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.”
