Rooster Crows, Mark 14:27-31 -Written by Donna Dolbow

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’  28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.” 30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus  answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.” 31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same. Mark 14:27-31

In reaching back to my childhood memories, I can recall sleeping over at my grandparents farm and awakening to the “crow of the rooster.”  Roosters are protectors to guard and defend the chickens. Roosters can crow anytime but are most associated with the crowing at daybreak—signifying a new day.

In this passage, Jesus refers to Peter denying Jesus before the rooster crows twice.  Peter, like the duties of a rooster, had opportunity all night to prepare to guard and defend Jesus. However, Peter fell into temptation and denial. The crowing of the rooster, no doubt, eventually became a “wake-up-call” for Peter. The denial teaches US to stand firm, take up OUR cross, and to follow HIM. The day of salvation becomes a “new day” of forgiveness, grace, and good news that God does not stop loving us even during our stumbles. Will YOU defend Jesus?  Jesus’ Resurrection becomes our Restoration!
